The base game itself is very well done by its creator, Tynan Sylvestor, but the modding community has really outdone itself. Someone mentioned and recommended Rimworld instead and I couldn't have been happier that I tried it out. When I first found Rimworld, I had mentioned my desire to play Dwarf Fortress to some friends, but I just couldn't get past the text base format of that game.
